On the back of the cross What looks like a pattern is a' spalting'. 

'Spalling' is invaded by mycelium trying to break down the trees.

'Spalling' deforms wood to form a unique pattern.

These trees are so loose they're hard to use.

Put other substances in the tree.

So they make it hard to process and use.  

This is known as a 'Impregnation'.
